These days, Hip Hop is at an interesting spot where there is an abundance of new artists putting their own spin on the genre while artists of the 90's Hip Hop cloth are still thriving. Everyday, I am seeing a new debate on which is better or whose music is trash. One thing apparent in both sides of the argument is perspective and lack of full understanding of the genre. This topic has been on my mind for a bit now and I thought it would be a good time to open the conversation. I think it's time we break Hip Hop down into subgenres how Rock N Roll is. We can't keep comparing/contrasting the Lil Uzi Verts and Yachtys to the Kendricks and Coles. They aren't trash artists. They just aren't from the same branch of Hip Hop. Can we celebrate creativity versus comparing different types of artists?
Example: Punk Rock is different from Heavy Metal. You cannot compare Green Day to Metallica.
As for my personal view, I think any one who creates can bring something new to the world and I appreciate it for what it is. Kendrick and Cole are a couple of my top inspirations for their conscious abilities, alongside meeting them both. I cannot listen to either one of their albums on all the time. I also enjoy Lil Uzi Vert's music a great bit. I do not hold these artists to the same standard. I simply enjoy whichever depending on the mood i'm in, but nonetheless, it is an artist putting themselves out to the world to be critiqued. Let's appreciate that.

Congratulations to Michael Smith and Jemele Hill ("His N Hers" - ESPN) on their new gig hosting SportsCenter. They are truly a good representation of our community and have no fear speaking on the topics that affect us alongside their sports talk. I personally met Jemele at a forum hosted by the National Association of Black Journalists at the University of Central Florida over 5 years ago and am proud to see her progression through the industry. Catch these two weekdays at 6PM starting February 6th. Keep up the hard work for the culture!

Since we're in the 2012 mood for this week's Throwbyk Thursday, here's my first video blog of the era capturing the night, starting at my college apartment and ending at a house party performance of the throwbyk song featured earlier, "Tonight." Follow me for the night!
For this week's edition of Throwbyk Thursday, we take you back to 2011 B.Payne. This song, following the success of his Vibe In A Circle (B-Mix) featuring 3TARDS, was in heavy rotation between 2011 and 2012 in nightclubs all over Florida. The chorus vocals are provided by worldwide DJ/Producer That Devastator, and the mixing was done by Cash Money Records' London On Da Track. The song presents a "let's forget it all and have a great night" vibe from the POV of a 19-year old college kid from the jook capital, South Florida. Enjoy!
